Tim Kelly Group Celebrates 50 Years of Excellence and Innovation
Starting from humble beginnings in Ballinrobe in 1974, the Tim Kelly Group proudly marks its 50th anniversary this year. Over the past five decades, the company has continuously expanded its expertise, growing into one of Ireland’s leading mechanical and electrical contractors, known for its commitment to quality and innovation.
To celebrate this milestone, the Tim Kelly Group hosted an exclusive event at its head office in Ballinrobe. The event featured a keynote speech by renowned broadcaster, former minister, and entrepreneur Ivan Yates. The event was expertly hosted by sports broadcaster and Mayo native Mike Finnerty. Mike led a lively and engaging panel discussion featuring Fr. Richard Gibbons, Lisa Chambers, and Stephen Coen, offering the audience insights and perspectives on business in the West of Ireland.
The early years
Tim Kelly, Founder and Chairperson, shared insights on the company’s journey, highlighting early challenges, notable achievements, and growth to where the company is today. The Tim Kelly Group’s story began with a £50 loan from Kathleen Kelly, the mother of Founder and Managing Director Tim Kelly. Tim recalls the early days when credit was scarce, and the company’s initial projects focused on electrifying homes in Connemara. The first major breakthrough came in 1975 with the electrical contract for the redevelopment of Mayoralty House in Galway. This was followed in 1977 by the company’s first advanced factory project for Údarás na Gaeltachta, a pivotal contract that laid the foundation for long-term partnerships with Údarás and IA, which continue to this day.
The 1990s marked a period of significant growth for the company, adapting their business model and capability to deliver large scale industrial projects. By 1999, the company had successfully completed one of its most technically advanced projects to date—the Electrical Design and Build contract for Castlerea Prison.
Moving into mechanical services
In 2005, the Tim Kelly Group expanded its service offerings with the acquisition of Thomas McManamon Mechanical Services. This move allowed the company to deliver a comprehensive package of mechanical and electrical services, strengthening its position as a market leader in highly regulated sectors such as life sciences and healthcare.
Today, as Tim Kelly Group celebrates its 50th anniversary, it reflects on a legacy of resilience, innovation, and excellence. The company looks forward to continuing its journey, building on its strong foundations and setting new standards in the industry for the next 50 years and beyond.
